I got off the phone and did some spite-powered research.
Later that week, after approximately 184 hours of staring at my computer screen, I booked a five-day trip for March.
My husband and I were headed on nonstop flights to Puerto Vallarta (from Minneapolis, not Miami), with round-trip airport transport to and from a hotel room in the exact neighborhood I wanted.
That hotel room had a huge private balcony with ocean views, a king-sized bed, AND A HAMMOCK in the room…
All for $1459.56.

Too many of them, actually.
To find our hotel room, I pored over hundreds of options on sites like Expedia, AirBnB, VRBO, Hotels.com, and random travel agent sites I ran across (like Suzanne’s).
Most options that fit my preferences… didn’t really fit.
The ocean view hotel room for $75 a night was really offering city view rooms for $75, with luxurious ocean views only from the rooftop terrace.
The round-trip flights to tropical luxury for $280 per person were really three different flights, a 16 hour layover, and a 3am arrival time.
We have so much technology at our fingertips, narrowing down options and giving us “discounted package prices.”
Those are great, don’t get me wrong.
But somehow, I still needed to click through photos on each room option for each hotel to see if the ocean view was really an ocean view, or if it was just a sliver of blue between apartment buildings.
I would have happily paid someone $60 to find me that hotel and those flights.

That walking trail that actually leads to a dumpy farm with aggressive dogs? No thanks. We’ll help you avoid sketchy locations or services (no tourist traps or places with bad reviews).

After selecting which itinerary options you want us to curate for you, you’ll be brought to a questionnaire.
With a few multiple-choice questions and some fill-in-the-blank answers, we’ll know enough about your preferences to find you some fantastic options.
Granted, if you do a sloppy job filling out the questionnaire, we won’t know much, so we’ll assume you’re open to anything. It pays to take a couple minutes and be thorough.
And yes, you have preferences, even if you’re not “picky.” Do you care if you sleep on a king bed versus a twin? Would you enjoy taking a local bus in Ecuador, or would you rather have a car and driver waiting for you?
Nothing is wrong with either of these preferences, but you have to be very clear about what you want. And once you tell us, we’ll find you something awesome.
However, the more non-negotiable preferences you give us, the fewer options we’ll find. And the more expensive your trip will be. So let us know what’s really non-negotiable for you, and what you’re willing to bend on if you’ll get something amazing in exchange.

If your stated preferences aren’t a match for the market (let’s say you have 4 people, a total budget of $2000, and you want an all-inclusive in Greece with flights included for a week…), we’ll figure that out pretty quickly. Not much time wasted on our end.
We’ll let you know which preferences are making our search impossible, and see if you’re flexible on those.

Here's how our revision process works:
One free revision: Each package comes with one complimentary revision to fine-tune your travel plans.
Additional revisions: Need more tweaks? No worries! Additional revisions are available for a fee of $20 each.
For your free revision, just let us know within 7 days of receiving your itinerary if you'd like to change any your preferences. After that period, extra charges may apply.
Our goal is to design a getaway you'll absolutely love, and we're here to make the process as smooth as possible.

Unlike automated sites, we personally sort through all the options (so… many… photos of hotel rooms…), ensuring they align with your specific needs. Filters on websites often miss the mark, and reviews can be misleading.

We don’t get commission. We’re not travel agents, booking for you and getting a cut from the hotel chain. Your fee is all we receive, so we have no motivation to upsell you on anything.
All fees are only refundable if appropriate options cannot be found after discussing preference adjustment. The only money refunded is what you pay Getaway Curator; your trip expenses are your responsibility.
We only know as much about your preferences as you tell us. Recommendations are tailored based on the preferences provided in the questionnaire. If some questions are incomplete, we will assume you have no preference in that area.
You handle all bookings and transactions. We’re not travel agents who book for you, and we are not liable for issues related to bookings or services rendered by third parties.
Prices and availability fluctuate quickly. If you receive a suggested itinerary and love it, book fast.
You are responsible for your own safety. We’ll do our best to recommend areas that have a reputation for being safe… and our responsibility ends there. Make good choices.
The promised timeframes depend on your quick responses to any questions your curator may send you via email during the process. If it takes you a few days to respond, that’s okay, but then give us a few more days to finish putting your info together.
Getaway Curator is not an on-call concierge or troubleshooter during your trip. We recommend itinerary options, and from there, you’re on your own, kid. We’ll do our best to make sure everything we recommend will be open, available, and treat you right. We can’t do anything about bad weather or rude hotel staff, as much as we’d like to magically fix it for you. Again: we will not be available during your trip for assistance. We’ll always recommend travel insurance, and if you choose to purchase it, they’re a good place to start if you have issues.
